it's widely known it's adam lanza is his name, 20 years old who was living with his mother. they say the shooting actually began that morning about three miles from the school at the home where he was living with his mother, that he shot her then drove her car to the school. now we're told that he had actually four handguns when he entered the school. we had known about the first two. they say there were two others that were found. and then he also had a rifle that was not brought into the school we're told by several officials, that it was left in the car, and that all these weapons were legally purchased by his parents. although officials say on tuesday of this past week adam lanza went to a sporting goods store in connecticut and tried to buy a rifle but was turned down for various reasons, because of the connecticut firearm restrictions laws. now the other thing is of course the big question is why. why did he target the school? i think initially everyone's thought was based on what we had heard yesterday, the supposition was that his mother taught at that school. the school offi

connecticut returned to the home of the gunman. the suspected gunman, 20-year-old adam lanza, searching for evidence. so far, authorities have been unable to retrieve any information from his computer, which was found smashed to pieces in the house he lived in with his mother, nancy. now, investigators have been trying to piece together an explanation for the crucial why, why did he do this, why did he shoot and kill his mother, why did he go to school -- a school that he had no link to and shoot 20 innocent children and six adults. the community is just starting to try to begin to heal. most students began going back to school, trying to go back into a routine today. they went back to school. police were standing guard outside the schools here. but the district superintendent said today that students and teachers from sandy hook elementary will not actually be going back to school until january, after winter break. there were also funerals today for two more 6 year olds. jessica rekos and james mattioli. we'll have more on those memorials later on in our show. first, we wanted to bring

-year-old adam lanza, seen here in a photo from 2005.killed his mother in her newtown home, then forced his way into the school friday, and opened fire, killing children and adults. lanza's aunt says she never imagined he could do such a thing. he was different, he was quiet, nice kid, good kid. in a statement, lanza's family says they share the grief of the community and the nation. for the first time, we are family of the suspected gunman behind the sandy hook elementary school massacre. adam lanza's aunt described him to reporters at her home in illinois. >> i know she had issues with school, she eventually wound up homeschooling him, she battled with the school district, in what capacity i'm not 100% certain, if it was behavior, if it was learning disabilities, i really don't know but he was a very very bright boy, he was smart. >> the police investigation continues they are finding very good evidence that the school and at the mother's home the plan on being on campus for a least one more day. ford least possibly two more days >>this just in to the kron 4 news room education

with more. pete, good evening. >> brian, investigators say adam lanza did not leave behind any note or letter that might reveal what was going through his mind before the shooting. hopes were high that his computer might provide some answers, but so far they say it has not. the police who found nancy lanza, adam lanza's mother, shot to death in bed, also found his computer. they say its internal hard drive, similar to this one, had been removed and severely damaged. attempts to get information from it, law enforcement officials say have so far not been successful. though experts say it can be difficult it's not always impossible. >> i've seen people try to damage a hard drive with a sledgemmer or screwdriver or throw it in the river. and in most of those cases the forensic efforts have been able to recover some data from the hard drive. >> reporter: as for the guns used in the shooting, officials say nancy lanza legally bought them within the last few years. atf agents verified she and her son adam visited various shooting ranges where he practiced firing weapons. her friends say so to
